London Eyes 3-D TV

LONDON--Underscoring that interest in stereoscopic broadcasting is growing around the world, the R&D team at UK broadcaster Sky tested 3-D TV this week at its West London headquarters. The technology demonstration showed that encoded 3-D content could be sent out using Sky’s digital satellite broadcast infrastructure. The home setup included a Sky+HD set top box and Hyundai 3-D ready TV in a conference room at the broadcasters’ headquarters.

Execs emphasized that it put together the demonstration to show that the Sky would be able to accommodate any future demand for 3-D TV. They said their next step would include gauging potential consumer interest, such as through focus groups.  ...[continued]

"If I like a movie and I've seen it already then I'm probably not going to order it on VOD. The only possibility of using VOD is if I hadn't seen the movie and I was curious about it. But in that case when you get up to $4.99 you can get Netflix sending you multiple movies for an entire month for that price. So I would much rather have Netflix and just que up a list of all the movies and then have them in my possession for as long as I need them. Sometimes I might think about getting a movie on VOD and I purchase the movie and then I get taken away from the movie and don't get back to it until 24 hours later and it is already gone. ...[continued]
