3D Film Festival finds a permanent home

L.A. Film School to play host

By DAVID S. COHEN

Hollywood is getting a 3D film festival of its own.

Two-year-old touring 3D event 3DFF has taken a permanent home at the Los Angeles Film School in Hollywood. The first Hollywood iteration of 3DFF will run Sept. 30-Oct. 3.

Fest will include 10 features and 10 shorts. Program includes daytime 3D seminars and classes at the LAFS, with screenings and after-parties to follow.

Among the events will be the 3opolis dance party, a blending of 3D projection and dance mixes hosted by a celebrity DJ. Venue for 3opolis has not yet been announced.

Fest directors are Christopher Crescitelli and Karen Annarino. Duo will curate the fest along with Douglas Hunter and Bob Johnston. Fest bills itself as the first fully curated international 3D film festival in the U.S.

Crescitelli, who founded 3DFF and produces 3opolis, told Daily Variety that 3DFF is in talks with studios for sneaks and red-carpet preems of some of the fall’s crowded 3D release schedule.

Main fest venue will be the 350-seat theater at the LAFS. Additional screenings will be held at nearby post house Oasis Imagery. RealD is the exclusive 3D tech provider for the fest, and Sony is providing the 4K d-cinema projector for the event.

With the L.A. Film Fest having decamped for downtown, 3DFF hopes to become a marquee event for the rising Sunset & Vine district around the W Hollywood hotel, which serves as the fest’s official hotel and will be a venue for some fest activities.

The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce is supporting 3DFF and L.A. city councilman Eric Garcetti is on the 3DFF board. Other board members include Julie Briggs, the Hollywood Palladium; Angela Gyetvan, 3ality Digital; Jason Goodman, 21st Century 3D; Jon and Peter Shapiro, Spectacle 3D, Ethan Schur, TDVision Systems; and Bill Heavener, Diane Derycz-Kessler and Dave Phillips of the L.A. Film School.

Board members will serve as jurors for fest awards, which will be presented Oct. 3.
