(Philip Lelyveld comment: Crowd-funding for music, video, and movies has been around for years. This is the first crowd-funded 3D film that I am aware of.)
After collecting some funds in an innovative way, Director Chris Young said : ” I spent several months exploring a low-budget, high quality, guerilla-style way of filming that would allow me to shoot 30 set-ups a day, on location in the Mojave Desert. We shot a ten-minute proof-of-concept short film that sets up the story. The plan now is to get back out there and make the feature-length version.”
A website called IndieGoGo made Young project possible. IndieGoGo, a donation funds raiser web site, is the brainchild of Danae Ringelmann, Slava Rubin and Eric Schell. Project owners from 120 countries have participated in more than 5,000 projects on IndieGoGo. Here’s how it works: Once you’ve created an IndieGoGo account, the website walks you through setting up a project description, fundraising goals and perks. Perks entice people to contribute at various levels .Ninety-two people donated $11,350 so that Chris Young could shoot a stereoscopic, live-action short film. In return, they got special mention in the credits.

Thanks for posting the DEAD OF NOWHERE to the ETC site. I also posted a note about my experience using open-source tools to create a 3d-DCP that you might enjoy — hoping that it will help other aspiring filmmakers that are looking for a cost effective (ie. FREE) solution for having their films formatted for theatrical exhibition.
