(Philip Lelyveld comment: lenticular game cards that change during game play!)
Every now and then, a new property comes along that you just know is going to be a hit. This fall, the kids will be talking about Redakai, a new franchise from the creators of Bakugan. When Redakai hits, it will be firing on all cylinders due to the simultaneous launch of a Cartoon Network animated series, an action figure line and a collectible card game. The story focuses on three teens as they travel the globe in search of mystical Kairu energy that is crucial for defense of the world from evil forces. While the story obviously appeals to a younger crowd, geeks of any age can appreciate what Redakai accomplishes with its use of a unique card game mechanic.
Games of the Redakai CCG will be played as 1-on-1 battles, where each player will control up to three characters. Each character is placed in an individual tray, where additional cards with transparent layers can be placed on top as the game progresses. When a character is attacked, a visual effect such as an energy blast or slash mark will overlay right on top of the character’s art. When they eventually transform, the art will be replaced entirely, but transparent layers along the edge will allow for stats and health to progress as the character evolves.
Another unique visual effect is the use of stereoscopic 3D effects on the cards. We took a look at these during New York Toy Fair, and while it doesn’t translate perfectly to a camera’s eye, the 3D effects really do pop. Effects placed on top of character cards will also include animation, so as a card is moved back and forth, players can see the attacks playing out on the character it is applied to. With all of these unique features combined, a game of Redakai playing out is actually a visually stunning sight.
