I’ve been playing around with a prototype of the LG Optimus 3D over the weekend, and I must say, it’s a pretty cool device. There’s nothing quite like snapping a picture and then viewing it immediately in 3D.
However, if you’re like me, using anything 3D will make you feel somewhat nauseous (though oddly, 3D movies are actually quite all right). I’ve had the same problem with the Nintendo 3DS, which made the device almost impossible for me to review.
That doesn’t mean you should skip the handset, especially if you’re unaffected by the motion sickness caused by viewing stereoscopic images. Putting 3D on an Android smartphone gives developers a new market to exploit, and given Android’s growing numbers, it may even surpass Nintendo’s installed base as a gaming device.
This won’t happen overnight, but developers may find it easier to port their current library of games to 3D than to develope new ones from scratch. This will allow 3D smartphones to tap into a wealth of stereoscopic games not offered by their competitors.
Now, I could be wrong, perhaps the 3D smartphone will just be relegated to a niche market, but you never know.
