Visual Technology Services Receives Patent for PDF3D Compression Technology

[Philip Lelyveld comment: patent covers embedding complex 3D graphics in PDFs, not S3D.]

[Press Release]

Visual Technology Services today announces that Patent GB2477368 “Triangle Mesh Compression” is granted to the company by the UK Intellectual Property Office, supporting the highly compressed terrain grid implementation in the PDF3D® software systems. The technology is successfully deployed world-wide and licensed for integration into a number of multi-national enterprise 3D report generation systems, in the areas of civil engineering, marine and airborne survey, geophysical exploration and geo-intelligence.

“The 3D PDF document format is feature rich and allows for embedding representations of complex 3D models, driving the need for high compression to allow collaborative communication and distribution, including as email attachments, and is particularly effective on terrain data” comments Ian Curington, CEO and co-author of the new patent. “The issuance of this critical patent strengthens our position as leader in 3D technical publishing using the PDF/Engineering document standards and assures our business partners of our commitment to this valuable IP area.”

This new patent represents a breakthrough that helps establish Visual Technology Services leadership in the field of 3D technical document generation. The GB2477368 patent covers PDF3D library proprietary methods used to compress large terrain grids, typical of digital elevation maps, bathymetric survey data, in a 3D triangle mesh surface packaged within a standard PDF file, such that the resulting document is up to 60% smaller and more efficient to communicate, while enabling the recipient to open and review the 3D model with rotation, pan, zoom, location probe, fly-through interaction.

“It is clear the company’s strong, focused, effective commercial intellectual property (IP) strategy is bearing fruit.” comments Ian Bingham founding partner of IPASSET LLP. “Clearly demonstrating the effectiveness of the strong professional IP management team, we are pleased to support this high growth entrepreneurial business. As the first application of the current portfolio to grant, we are looking forward to further announcements in the near future.”
