…While there was a decrease in 3D and Plasma TVs, the sale of LCD TVs has increased by 7 per cent to shipping just over 205m units in 2011. This is still a decrease in sales but it has been enough to be able to offset the decrease in 3D and plasma shipments. …
The decline in shipments is most noticeable in Japan and Western Europe. Meanwhile other parts of the world, such as the USA, have shown slight growth. China, however, saw a strong increase in TV shipments in the last year with more than 90 per cent of TVs in the country being LCD as of 2011.
“The causes of slow demand in 2011 were complex, and although LCD TV showed growth, results were well below industry expectations.
“The low level of shipments were partially caused by excessive inventory levels early in 2011 for the US and European markets, as well as a sharp drop in demand in Japan following the end of the government sponsored Eco-Points program that caused a surge in replacement activity during 2009-2010,” said Paul Gagnon, NPD DisplaySearch director of North America TV Research.
