Australia’s Nine Network plans Olympics 3D channel

[Advanced Television]

Australia’s Nine Network is seeking to launch a stand-alone 3D channel for the London Olympics, subject to  approval from the Australian Communications and Media Authority and Communications Minister Stephen Conroy, reports The Australian. Any such authorisation would require the watchdog and Minister to grant Nine additional spectrum.

A highlights package is likely between 11am and 4pm, but should no additional spectrum be allocated, the service would feature as channel 41 on the electronic programme guide, with coverage on one of Nine’s existing multi-channels, GO or GEM.

Since the launch of 3D television in Australia in autumn 2010, more than 100,000 3D television sets have been sold.
