Just shy of 2,000 new digital screens were added across Europe in the second quarter 2011, bringing the total active digital screen base to 13,939, up by 15.9 per cent from the 12,013 screens active in Q1. The quarter recorded a major turnaround as more 2D screens were deployed than 3D, for the first time in our quarterly tracking series. As a result, 3D’s penetration continued to fall for the fourth consecutive quarter, but still accounting for over two thirds of the European digital screen base.
Average digital screen capacity reached over 40 per cent in Western Europe in H1 2011, as ten European territories exceeded the milestone of over half of screens converted. This includes UK, France and Netherlands which joined the ranks with the majority of screens now digital in Q2. Meanwhile, Norway became the first fully converted d-cinema territory in Europe in H1 2011.
