[Philip Lelyveld Comment: the “first” claim is untrue. 2001’s Revolution OS was aggressively open. It may be the first open 3D animation.]

Elephants Dream is the world’s first open movie, made entirely with open source graphics software such asBlender, and with all production files freely available to use however you please, under a Creative Commons license.
The short film was created by the Orange Open Movie Project studio in Amsterdam during 2005/2006, bringing together a diverse team of artists and developers from all over the world.
At the October 2010 Blender Conference, Wolfgang Draxinger presented his re-render of ED in stereo 3d. Since then you can find this stereo version film youtube or vimeo.
You can download the movie, and read more about its creation, Project Orange, and Blender here: http://www.elephantsdream.org/
