In anticipation of the 3D Summit now taking place at the Hollywood/Highland Center, the people at the Entertainment Technology Center at USC put together a presentation on Monday, September 19th 2011 including a guided tour by Mr. Phil Lelyveld—Center Director who graciously conducted a tour and directed our attention toward the future of 3D. The Entertainment Technology Center was founded by Mr. George Lucas and the CTO’s of the seven major studios of the time to provide a neutral place to discuss the future of technology and for discussing ideas that they could agree on to avoid Format Wars. Its major achievement in the 90’s was that it was the place where they hammered out the guidelines for digital projection in the theaters. Right now there’s a 3D initiative including social media, an over-the-top delivery initiative and others all of which address how 3D content is delivered to the public. There were several stations set up the first of which was a graphic that showed a peak in the interest in 3D content, then a lull and where we are now which is a productive phase. Mr. Lelyveld echoed the sentiment that we’ve moved well beyond the perception that 3D is a passing fad.
