3D advocate James Cameron believes that devices such as tablets, laptops, desktop PCs and high end mobile phones all have a huge part to play in the growth of 3D. Particularly important is the ability of such devices to bring glasses-free 3D to the mass market, thus making it a part of people’s daily lives. Cameron was speaking at the annual IBC conference in Amsterdam, and was adamant that whilst moves had done the job of making 3D content viable, it was up to the portable devices to help ingrain S3D content into people’s lives.
Mass Adoption of 3D
Rather than waiting for glasses-free TVs to be ready for the mass marketplace, Cameron insists that the public’s appetite for a 3D experience can be stimulated by the use of small-scale autostereoscopic screens. “Now smaller screens that are in the desktop, laptop, tablet size, where it is basically a single user model, you can do those right now,” explained Cameron. Whilst some products of this type are currently available, Cameron was confident that there will be “a lot more of those products coming to market over the next year or so.”
Glasses-Free 3D
Whilst the finishing line for viable large-screen glasses-free 3D TVs is a long way off, the technology exists for personal screens. Cameron summed up his thoughts thus: “3D doesn’t equal glasses, 3D only equals glasses in certain circumstances.”
