Last year at this time, Sensio Technologies CEO Nicholas Routhier said he was confident several television manufacturers would be using his company’s technology.
At the company’s annual general meeting Thursday, Routhier admitted his predictions last year were optimistic, and that it has taken longer than expected for Sensio to become the 3D compression software of choice for television manufacturers. Currently, only one company – Vizio, based in the U.S. – uses Sensio. The others use an open-source and free software to bring 3D images to the screen.
“We’re fighting free,” Routhier said. “It’s very difficult to beat free.”
However, Routhier said he believes television manufacturers will soon recognize the value in paying for Sensio’s proprietary software, because it delivers better quality images, and the company is set to launch an extensive library of 3D movies, sports events and concerts in the next few months. He said by the end of next year, that library will have 100 titles, which could be streamed to televisions through an Internet connection.

Routhier said he expects the company will be able to diversify its revenue stream, because it will be moving to put on more live 3D events, which are generally viewed in movie theatres. The most successful live 3D event for the company was the 2010 World Cup, which was broadcast in more than 1,000 theatres in at least 26 countries. …
