Short throw projectors shook up the market. Now ultra short throw (UST) models are creating another significant impact. But with models twice the price of a standard projector Nick Rogers examines the pros and cons of UST technology and if it’s right for you.
Traditionally projectors were ceiling mounted several metres away from the screen in a boardroom or meeting room installation and used for just a few hours a week.
However with the huge growth of projector usage in classrooms in the last decade, sparked by BECTA funding, significant health and safety concerns were raised by teachers who were spending the whole day standing in front of an interactive whiteboard (IWB) looking directly at a bright projector lamp.
Short throw projectors, using a large fish eye lens to achieve the shorter distance and mounted on a long boom arm from the wall above the screen, quickly gained popularity in the education world as a way to get around this problem by shining the light from the lamp from a greater angle to avoid damage to the teacher’s eyesight. …
