Curry film students get lessons in 3-D technology

A little piece of Los Angeles took up residence in Milton recently. Jason Goodman, founder and CEO of 21st Century 3D, held a weeklong workshop with students in a digital documentary and movie-making class at Curry College.

Jerry Gibbs, professor and co-chairman of the communications department, stood by as Goodman worked with students on shooting with a large 3-D camera. They began in the studio and then brought the rig outside to the quad, where dancer Rebecca R. Levy performed in front of the lens.

“What I want my students to understand is 3-D is not just a fad this time,” Gibbs said.

Gibbs said the market for 3-D content is expanding. Using a special kind of screen that doesn’t require glasses for the 3-D effect, the next generation of smart phones and tablets will offer users a 3-D experience at their fingertips, he said.

“I believe we are ahead of the game … there is a place for 3-D, and it’s not only on the big screen anymore,” Gibbs said.

This semester is the first time that Curry students have been exposed to 3-D technology, but going forward, the film and television concentrations of the communications major will require students to do work in 3-D.

The classes they will take will range from experimenting with techniques for film – what the students did Friday – to shooting other types of programming, like news broadcasts and cooking shows, in 3-D. …
