Immersive 3D game dome is the future of gaming

One of the most exciting new ideas in 3D games is the immersive 3D gaming dome, a 3D game console still under development. The project is not being developed by Nintendo, Electronic Arts or SONY. And the objective is not to bounce birds off pigs or satisfy a need for speed. The objective is to teach inner city girls science and engineering skills.

“It’s not a first-person shooter,” says game dome developer David Pentecost. “We’re going more for a first-person explorer.”

This 3D video game environment is being developed at the unlikeliest of places — theLower Eastside Girls Club in Manhattan. The building is not even built yet, but Mr. Pentecost is developing the first-of-its-kind domed planetarium for video gaming for use on-site.

His prototypes show a chair with a very large dome overhead, not unlike the dome-style hair dryer chairs at your grandmother’s beauty salon. The dome slips down, providing a 180-degree view and a fully immersive gaming experience.

The first game Mr. Pentecost developed was a game in which players got to meet and walk around the home of 19th-century poet Emily Dickinson. …

While the actual hardware is still being developed, the immersive gaming dome’s software and back-end systems are already up and running. You could even duplicate this yourself. …

The at-risk youth served by this girls’ club are also involved in aspects of developing the gaming dome, enhancing that population’s interest in engineering and science. …
