Two years ago, XPAND 3D hired close to 500 people to manufacture 3D glasses at its Beaverton production plant.
The catalyst then was the upcoming cinematic release of “Avatar,” the James Cameron film that generated a renewed appetite in consumers for 3D technology.
That year, XPAND’s Beaverton plant made 1 million glasses. But with cinemas now flush with 3D glasses, XPAND’s local workforce settled down around 60 and its production rate last year fell to 500,000 pairs.
